What law-abiding really means in South African firearm law

14 Jan 2026 | By

To legally own a firearm in South Africa, a citizen must pass a competency test, undergo a background check, prove they have a safe storage facility, and demonstrate a valid reason for ownership. The process takes months.

Criminals skip all of this. They acquire weapons illegally, often from the very police service tasked with controlling firearms. The Firearms Control Act, when properly enforced, is already one of the strictest in the world. The proposed amendments punish the wrong people.
