Terms & Conditions

Please read these terms carefully before using our website or signing any petition. By accessing this site, you agree to be bound by the following terms.

Effective Date: February 2026. These terms govern your use of the Civil Society South Africa website and all services offered through it, including petition campaigns and public submissions.
1.

Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using the Civil Society South Africa ("CSSA") website at civilsocietysa.co.za, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree with any part of these terms, you must not use this website or its services.

Your continued use of the website following any changes to these terms constitutes acceptance of those changes. We encourage you to review this page periodically to stay informed of any updates.

2.

What Petition Signing Means

When you sign a petition on this website, you are not merely expressing an opinion or registering a vote in a poll. Your signature forms part of a formal submission to the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa, made in accordance with the constitutional right of citizens to petition government and participate in the legislative process.

Petition signatures collected through this platform may be compiled and attached to written submissions directed to Parliamentary Portfolio Committees, the National Council of Provinces, the National Assembly, or other lawful recipients. These submissions carry legal weight and are placed on the public parliamentary record.

By signing, you authorise CSSA to include your name and supporting details in formal democratic submissions on your behalf.

3.

User Representations

By signing a petition or using the services of this website, you represent and warrant that:

  • You are a citizen of the Republic of South Africa or a permanent resident with a valid South African identity document.
  • You are at least 18 years of age, or, if younger, have the consent of a parent or legal guardian.
  • All information you provide, including your name, email address, and any other personal details, is truthful and accurate.
  • You are signing of your own free will and are not impersonating another person or signing on behalf of a fictitious individual.
  • You understand that your signature may be included in official submissions to Parliament and other government bodies.

CSSA reserves the right to remove any signature that it reasonably believes to be fraudulent, duplicated, or submitted in bad faith.

4.

How Signature Data Is Used

The personal information you provide when signing a petition is collected for the sole purpose of democratic advocacy. Specifically, your data may be used in the following ways:

  • Parliamentary Submissions: Your name and, where applicable, your province of residence may be included in formal written submissions to Parliamentary Portfolio Committees or other legislative bodies.
  • PAIA Applications: Signature counts and aggregated data may accompany applications filed under the Promotion of Access to Information Act (Act 2 of 2000) to support requests for government-held records.
  • Campaign Communications: Your email address may be used to send you updates on the specific campaign you signed, including outcome notifications and related advocacy actions.
  • Aggregate Reporting: The total number of signatures may be published on this website, in press releases, and in public communications. Individual names will not be published without the signatory's explicit consent.

CSSA will never sell, rent, or trade your personal information to any third party. Your data is stored securely and handled in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), Act 4 of 2013.

5.

Intellectual Property

All content on this website, including but not limited to text, graphics, logos, images, legal analyses, campaign materials, research publications, and software, is the intellectual property of Civil Society South Africa or its content suppliers and is protected by South African and international copyright law.

You may share links to CSSA campaigns and pages for the purpose of supporting advocacy efforts. However, you may not reproduce, distribute, modify, or create derivative works from any content on this website without the prior written consent of CSSA.

The CSSA name, logo, and associated branding are proprietary marks. Unauthorised use of these marks is strictly prohibited.

6.

Contributions and Donations

All financial contributions to Civil Society South Africa are entirely voluntary. No contribution is required to sign a petition, access campaign information, or use any public feature of this website.

Contributions are used to fund legal research, formal parliamentary submissions, PAIA applications, campaign infrastructure, and public advocacy communications. CSSA endeavours to apply all funds responsibly and transparently toward its stated mission.

i

Section 18A Disclosure: Civil Society South Africa does not currently hold Section 18A tax-exempt status as defined by the South African Revenue Service. As a result, contributions made to CSSA are not tax deductible. We are transparent about this because we believe honesty is the foundation of public trust.

Contributions are non-refundable unless CSSA, at its sole discretion, determines that a refund is warranted due to exceptional circumstances.

7.

Limitation of Liability

Civil Society South Africa provides this website and its services on an "as is" and "as available" basis. While we take every reasonable step to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the content published on this platform, CSSA makes no warranties or representations, express or implied, regarding the completeness, accuracy, or fitness for a particular purpose of any information provided.

To the fullest extent permitted by South African law, CSSA, its directors, officers, employees, volunteers, and agents shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from:

  • Your use of, or inability to use, this website or any of its services.
  • Any errors, omissions, or inaccuracies in the content published on this website.
  • Any unauthorised access to or alteration of your personal data.
  • The outcome of any parliamentary submission, PAIA application, or other advocacy action undertaken by CSSA.

Nothing in these terms seeks to exclude or limit liability in a manner that is not permitted under the Consumer Protection Act (Act 68 of 2008) or any other applicable South African legislation.

8.

These Terms and Conditions are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Republic of South Africa. Any disputes arising from or in connection with these terms, or your use of this website, shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the Republic of South Africa.

In the event that any provision of these terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable by a court of competent jurisdiction, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect. The invalid or unenforceable provision shall be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it valid and enforceable while preserving the original intent.

9.
